Sensei Matt Dorsey has truly made the martial arts his life’s work. He has been studying and practicing martial arts since 1975. He is currently a 8th degree black belt in Isshin-Ryu karate. Along with his wife, Jackie (6th degree black belt), Sensei Dorsey owns and operates two full-time dojos in Rochester, NY.
He started Isshin-Ryu Karate under Master Joseph Jennings while attending Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.). He started teaching for Master Jennings at one of his branch dojos in 1980. Since then, Sensei Dorsey has taught thousands of students and promoted over 250 students to black belt ranks.
Sensei Dorsey has also had extensive training with Isshin-Ryu Grandmaster Angi Uezu, participating in classes during his numerous visits to the U.S. along with two trips to Okinawa for training and competing.
Sensei Dorsey participated in and is featured on many of the Panther Production videos with Grandmaster Angi Uezu on the complete Isshin-Ryu Karate system.
From the mid 1970s to the 1990s, Sensei Dorsey participated in karate tournaments across the country, competing in kata, kumite, kobudo and board breaking. He also has trained in many other martial arts, including Iaido (Samurai Sword), Tae Kwon Do, Jiu-Jitsu, Escrima (Stick Fighting), Shurite Kempo and more.
The father of two teenagers – Kevin and Allison (both who studied karate) – Sensei Dorsey believes that a dojo should have same strong values and connections as a family. His desire is to help others improve themselves – their character, their patience, their perseverance – through solid karate training.
He is truly honored and humbled to be a part of the leadership of the IIKF and is dedicated to helping its members around the world.
